Study in the UK for Saudis: Admission and Visa Guide
Studying in the UK from Saudi Arabia comes down to three main steps: choosing a university and course, applying and getting an offer, and then applying for a Student visa. Each step has its own requirements and timing, and starting early makes the file calmer and less error-prone.
This guide covers applying through UCAS, the English level the visa requires, the official costs published today, whether you may need ATAS, and how admission relates to a scholarship. If you want a university admissions office in Riyadh to help organise your file, we also explain what we can do and what stays with the university and the embassy.
Steps to Study in the UK as a Saudi Student
The usual path from decision to arrival:
- Choose the subject and level (bachelor's, master's, doctorate) and compare universities by course, not only by name.
- Check the entry and English requirements on the official course page.
- Apply: through UCAS for undergraduate study, or usually directly to the university for postgraduate study.
- Once your offer is unconditional, the university issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies).
- Apply for the UK Student visa with proof of English and funds.
- Arrange accommodation and travel, and check the university's arrival and enrolment rules.
Applying Through UCAS for a Bachelor's Degree
Most UK undergraduate applications go through UCAS. According to the UCAS dates for 2027 entry, you can choose up to five courses in the initial application. The 15 October deadline applies to Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses, and 13 January is the equal consideration date for most other courses.
Postgraduate applications are usually made directly on the university website and deadlines vary by course, so check each programme page. For the motivation letter, see our Personal Statement guide.
English Language and Entry Requirements
The Student visa requires proof of English. The GOV.UK English language page sets at least CEFR B2 for degree level and above, which can be shown with an approved SELT or by other routes listed on the page. Some universities ask for higher scores than the visa minimum, especially for medicine and law.
To compare tests, read our IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo comparison, and make sure the test you book is accepted by both the university and the visa. For the difference between university and scholarship requirements, see Scholarship Without IELTS.
Official Costs Published Today
These figures come from GOV.UK at the time of review. They cover the visa, not tuition:
- Student visa application fee: £558.
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year for students, per the healthcare surcharge page.
- Maintenance funds: £1,529 per month for London and £1,171 per month elsewhere, for up to 9 months, plus the first year's course fees shown on your CAS, per the financial requirements page.
Tuition fees vary widely by university and subject, so take that figure from the course page.
Do You Need an ATAS Certificate?
Some sensitive-technology courses require an ATAS certificate before you start, per the official ATAS page. The list of exempt nationalities published there does not include Saudi Arabia at the time of review, so if your subject is advanced science or engineering, ask the university early whether your course needs ATAS.
The page states that processing takes at least 30 working days, can be longer in the April to August peak, and that applying is free. This matters most for cybersecurity and engineering applicants.
Studying in the UK and the Saudi Scholarship
If you are on a scholarship, the university and subject must meet the programme's rules, and lists and tracks change from time to time. Review the tracks in Imdad track universities and the Pioneers track, and confirm with the body that sponsors you before applying. For the admission steps, see university admission for the Saudi scholarship.
Working After You Graduate
After finishing your course you may be eligible for the Graduate visa. According to the Graduate visa page today, it lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for PhD holders. Details are in the Graduate Route guide, and the visa process is in the Student visa guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a UK Student visa take?
GOV.UK says a decision usually comes within 3 weeks when you apply from outside the UK. Times can vary, so avoid non-refundable travel bookings before you have a decision.
When can I apply for the visa?
From outside the UK you can apply up to 6 months before your course starts, and you need a CAS first.
Is IELTS enough for admission and the visa?
It can be, if it is from an approved provider and meets the scores your university asks for. Check that the test type is accepted for the visa (SELT) and by your university.
Do I need ATAS?
Only for certain sensitive courses. Ask your university or use the checker mentioned on the ATAS page, and do not wait until the last minute.
Can I bring my family?
The dependants page allows this only in specific cases, such as research-based postgraduate courses or students with a government scholarship longer than 6 months, with extra funds shown.
Do you guarantee admission or a visa?
No. We prepare and follow up your file, but the final decision belongs to the university, the embassy or the relevant authority.
