UK Graduate Visa: Duration and Eligibility 2026
The Graduate visa lets people who finish their studies in the UK stay and work after graduation without a job offer. According to the GOV.UK Graduate visa page today, it lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027, and 3 years for PhD holders.
This topic is update-sensitive, so this article follows what the official page shows at the time of review. If you are planning to study abroad from Saudi Arabia and want a study abroad consultant to explain your options, the points below summarise what you need to know.
Is your file ready to submit?
Most refusals come from one small detail in the file. Send us your destination and travel dates and we will review your documents before you apply.

| Qualification | Visa length per GOV.UK |
|---|---|
| Bachelor's or master's, applying on or before 31 December 2026 | 2 years |
| Bachelor's or master's, applying from 1 January 2027 | 18 months |
| PhD or doctoral qualification | 3 years |
What counts is the date you apply, not your graduation date. If you are close to the change, check the official page for the latest wording.
Who Can Apply?
The eligibility page says you must be in the UK on a Student or Tier 4 visa, have completed an eligible bachelor's, postgraduate or other course for a minimum period, and your education provider must have told the Home Office that you completed it successfully.
You do not have to wait for the graduation ceremony or your certificate. You can apply once the university has notified the Home Office, and you must apply before your current Student visa expires.
Minimum Study Inside the UK
The immigration rules (Appendix Graduate) say that for courses of 12 months or less you need Student permission for the full course, and for longer courses at least 12 months, with study taking place in the UK apart from permitted study abroad. See the Appendix Graduate rules and the eligible courses page to confirm that your programme qualifies.
Fees and Processing Time
- Application fee: £937.
- Healthcare surcharge: usually £1,035 for each year, per GOV.UK.
- A decision usually comes within 8 weeks after you complete the application, prove your identity and provide documents, and you may stay in the UK while you wait.
Note that the Graduate visa surcharge differs from the Student visa one (£776 per year for students). Check the fees page before paying.
What the Visa Allows
It allows you to work in most jobs and be self-employed, travel abroad and return, and bring eligible dependants. You cannot work as a professional sportsperson and you cannot access most public benefits.
It cannot be extended. To stay after it ends you must switch to another eligible visa, such as a work visa, under the conditions published at that time.
How to Plan Around the Duration Change
- Work out your course end date and when the university will notify the Home Office.
- Ask the international student office when they will send that notification.
- Do not let your current visa expire before you apply.
- Read the GOV.UK page on the day you apply, not an old copy.
- If you are near 31 December 2026, do not rely on figures from social media.
Graduate Visa Versus Student Visa
The Student visa is tied to a sponsoring university and a specific course, while the Graduate visa lets you work in most jobs and be self-employed after you complete your studies. The fees also differ: £937 to apply and £1,035 per year for the healthcare surcharge. It helps to calculate the cost of both stages before you decide to study, and to plan for the possibility of switching to another visa once it ends.
Common Mistakes With a Graduate Visa Application
Most problems come from small details rather than complicated rules:
- Applying after the Student visa has expired, when the official page requires you to apply before it does.
- Assuming the length is counted from your graduation date, when the date you apply is what counts.
- Paying the Student visa surcharge amount instead of the Graduate one.
- Not checking that the course is eligible and that the minimum study took place in the UK.
- Relying on an old article or social media post instead of the current GOV.UK page.
After you complete the online form you will be asked to prove your identity and provide the required documents, then wait for a decision, and you may remain in the UK while you wait. Keep copies of everything you submit.
