Australia Genuine Student Requirement: Questions and Documents
The Genuine Student requirement for Australia asks you to show, through written answers and supporting documents, that you genuinely intend to study and that your choice of course and institution makes sense given your circumstances and plans. It applies to Student visa applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024 and replaced the earlier Genuine Temporary Entrant assessment.
Here we explain the four questions, the documents the Department of Home Affairs lists and how to write honest, clear answers. No answer guarantees approval, as the department decides. At Almorad, as a study abroad advisor, we help organise and review your file before submission.
Is your file ready to submit?
Most refusals come from one small detail in the file. Send us your destination and travel dates and we will review your documents before you apply.

The requirement tests whether you are a genuine applicant for entry and stay as a student, according to the official requirement page. The department explains that a wish to seek permanent residence after study is not counted against you by itself; the focus is that study is your primary purpose.
The Four Questions and How to Answer
The questions are answered inside the application form in English, with a maximum of 150 words each, and applicants with a previous student visa answer one extra question. Here are general ideas for each:
| Question | What your answer covers |
|---|---|
| Your current circumstances | Your work or study and family and community ties in Saudi Arabia |
| Why this course and institution | What you actually researched and your understanding of the study demands |
| How the study benefits your future | How the course serves your career plan |
| Other relevant information | Any context the other questions did not cover |
Supporting Documents
The department prefers evidence that backs up your answers. The official page suggests categories including:
- Academic history: certificates, transcripts and study periods.
- Australian study record if any, with reasons for course changes and any gaps.
- Employment: employer details, position and a reference contact.
- Home country circumstances: family and community ties and whether a similar course is available locally.
- Financial documents: tax returns, bank statements and employment records for 12 months.
- Future prospects: a job offer with salary details if you have one.
What the Officer Assesses
The department lists factors including your situation in your home country, how well the course fits your qualifications and work, how well prepared you are and how much you know about the provider and living costs, and your travel and visa history. It also considers overall circumstances, including parental intentions where the applicant is a minor.
How to Write Your Answers
- Give specific details about the course and institution instead of general phrases.
- Connect the study to your academic and career path logically.
- Respect the word limit and use simple language.
- Keep your answers consistent with your documents and the rest of the file.
- Be honest, and never copy a ready-made text from someone else.
To organise your ideas in a similar style, see our personal statement guide.
Financial Capacity and Other Documents
You need a valid CoE, OSHC unless an exemption applies, and enough money for your stay, as stated on the Student visa page. The department publishes the minimum amount in the Gather Documents step, so we do not print a figure here to avoid showing an outdated number, and real costs are often higher.
New Rules From 2 October 2026
According to the official changes page, the rules change for applying from inside Australia and for including family members in a Student visa application. Read it before making any travel or relocation plan.
Common Mistakes
- Copied or generic answers that do not reflect your circumstances.
- Contradictions between answers and documents, or between your plan and academic background.
- Choosing a course unrelated to your background without explaining why.
- Ignoring earlier visa history and not explaining any gaps.

How to Think Through an Answer
We do not provide a ready-made text, but here is a general way of thinking. For the question on why you chose the course, mention what you studied, what you liked in the course content, and what professional gap it fills for you. For your circumstances, describe your current work or study and your ties to family in Saudi Arabia.
Make every sentence provable with a document or a fact. If you say you work in a certain field, attach your employer letter, and if you describe your academic background, attach your transcript.
