US University Deadlines 2027: ED, EA, RD and Rolling

US university deadlines differ from one institution to the next, but most deadlines for fall 2027 entry fall between November 2026 and January 2027, and some universities review applications year-round. EducationUSA guidance notes that US undergraduate applications are typically due between November and January for students who want to start the following September.

If you are a student in Saudi Arabia planning to study in the United States, now is the right time to settle your list, tests and documents. This article explains the application plans, shows examples of deadlines published on official pages, and suggests a practical timeline. The dates below are examples only; the university's own page is always the final reference.

Last updated: 2 October 2026. We checked the information against the official sources listed at the end of this article. Requirements can change, so verify them before you apply.

Common Application Deadlines for Fall 2027

Most universities open applications in the autumn and close the early round around 1 November, with regular deadlines between mid-December and mid-January. Some use other dates such as 30 November or early February, and others accept applications on a rolling basis until places fill. There is no single date that suits every university.

ED, EA, RD and Rolling Admission Explained

These plans decide when you apply, when you hear back and whether you commit to enrolling. Read each university's rules, because details vary, and do not rely on the label alone.

PlanShort meaningPoint to watch
Early Decision (ED)Early application with a commitment to enrol if admittedUsually binding, so use it only for a university that fits you financially and academically
Early Action (EA)Early application without a commitment to enrolSome universities give priority for competitive majors or scholarships to early applicants
Regular Decision (RD)The standard application deadlineMore time to improve your file, but competition for places can be tougher
RollingApplications reviewed as they arrive until places fillThe earlier you apply, the easier it is to finish paperwork and the visa

Fall or Spring Intake?

Fall 2027 is the most common route because most programs start then and many competitive programs and scholarships are tied to it. Spring intake exists only at some universities and for some majors, often with earlier dates, since some set the deadline in the preceding autumn, as in the ASU example above. If your major has limited seats, ask the university whether it admits students in the term you want at all.

A Practical Timeline for Saudi Students

These steps are a general order of work, not university dates. Adjust the timing once your list is final.

  1. Choose 6 to 10 universities that fit your major and budget, and review costs in our guide to US study costs.
  2. Record each university's deadlines, application plan and test requirements in one table.
  3. Book your English test and SAT/ACT, if required, early enough for scores to arrive on time.
  4. Ask your school early for transcripts, translations and recommendation letters, since these often take time.
  5. Start your Common App essay early, and see our Common App guide for account setup.
  6. Submit several days before the deadline, because platforms get busy on the last day.
  7. Track each university portal after applying, and prepare financial documents for the visa once you are admitted.

Common Deadline Mistakes

  • Relying on an old date or a non-official website.
  • Mixing up the application deadline with the deadline for test scores or letters.
  • Applying ED without checking the cost, since it is usually binding.
  • Overlooking scholarship deadlines, which can be earlier than the admission deadline.
  • Assuming the Saudi scholarship platform deadline is the university deadline; each has its own schedule. See our Saudi Qabool deadlines guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start applying for fall 2027?

Now, if you have not started. Most early deadlines are in November 2026 and regular ones between December and January, but check each university's page.

Do international students have different deadlines?

Some universities set separate dates or requirements for international students, especially for financial documents and English proof. Read the international admissions page.

Can I apply after the regular deadline?

Universities with rolling admission may accept later applications, while those with a fixed closing date will not. Ask the admissions office directly.

Does applying early raise my chances?

We do not promise that. Policies differ by university and the decision rests with the university. What matters is that your file is complete when you apply.

Do all universities require SAT or ACT?

No, policies differ. See our article on applying without SAT/ACT.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL before applying?

Many universities ask for English proof, and some accept Duolingo. Compare them in our IELTS, TOEFL and Duolingo comparison.
