Got admission to a US university? The next step is the F-1 student visa. Here are the steps in order, from receiving your I-20 to the interview at the embassy, in a simple way.
Rules and fees change, so check the US Embassy website and the official immigration website before every step.
What is the F-1 visa?
A visa for international students enrolled full-time in an approved program in the United States. It is only issued after you are officially admitted and the university issues your I-20.
Steps in order
| Step | What is required |
|---|---|
| 1. Admission | You receive the university's acceptance letter |
| 2. I-20 form | Issued by the university after proof of funds |
| 3. SEVIS fee | Pay the student information system fee |
| 4. DS-160 form | Complete the online visa application |
| 5. Visa fee | Pay according to the embassy's instructions |
| 6. Book an appointment | At the embassy or available consulate |
| 7. Interview | Attend with your documents |
Fees are approximate and subject to change according to official updates.
Documents to prepare for the interview
- A valid passport.
- A signed I-20.
- SEVIS payment receipt.
- DS-160 confirmation and photo.
- The acceptance letter.
- Proof of funds (bank statements or a sponsorship letter, if any).
- Academic certificates and language results.
Common interview questions
- Why did you choose this university and major?
- How will you fund your studies?
- What are your plans after graduation?
- Do you have ties in Saudi Arabia that ensure your return?
Our advice: answer clearly and briefly, and do not memorize answers in an unnatural way.
When should I apply?
Usually after you receive your I-20, and early enough before your studies begin, because embassy appointments can be tight in some seasons. Also check the rules on the earliest date you can enter before your program starts.
Notes for scholarship students
If you are a scholarship student, you may need a letter from the sponsoring body and additional steps with the cultural mission. Check your sponsor's requirements to avoid delays.
